According to Forbes, the technical skills to be an accountant are important, but can be learned, what is even more important are the soft skills, such as Communication, Time Management and Organization, Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving and Strong Attention to Detail.
So why do women accountants rock? Well, it is quite self-explanatory. The female skill list is exhaustive, but what women do take pride in are:
Communication
Effective communication is essential to all business roles, accountants included. According to Glamour Magazine, women are very fluent verbally and have a denser auditory cortex, which makes them listen better and communicate better.
Time Management and Organization
Careful organization and effective time management are two soft skills needed to become an accountant. As women are constantly multi-tasking (managing a household, family life, animals or kids), managing time and organization is a natural skill developed by women.
Critical Thinking
To succeed as an accountant, you need strong critical thinking skills. Ethical dilemmas, reporting errors and unbalanced spreadsheets require careful thought and investigation to arrive at the best solutions. Various studies show that women are superior when it comes to critical thinking.
Problem-Solving
Technological advances do not negate the need for accountants to predict trends and make financial forecasts. Problem-solving remains among the top required skills for accountants. Women have strong problem-solving abilities which equips them with the key skill to be a successful accountant.
Strong Attention to Detail
As a highly regulated field, accounting necessitates strong attention to detail. There is little margin for error when you’re responsible for someone else’s finances. Women tend to absorb more information through their senses and store more of it in the brain for other uses. Therefore, women generally have more interest in the details.
